2024 Reports

The Regional & Remote Music Summit brought together 166 music professionals, policymakers, and community leaders on Larrakia country in Darwin in August 2024, with the goal of amplifying the voices of regional and remote storytellers.

The event provided a platform to address the unique challenges faced by artists in these areas, such as geographic isolation, limited connectivity, and scarce resources. It also highlighted the need for improved access to education, industry networks, touring opportunities, and pathways to markets.

The Summit Program presented panel sessions, case studies, keynote presentations and roundtable forums that responded to number of broad themes, including:

  • Place, storytelling, and culture
  • Regional and remote live music and festivals
  • Adapting to the climate crisis
  • Understanding and connecting with audiences
  • The importance of safe spaces
  • Skills gaps and building capacity
  • Policy and investment

We extend our thanks to the Speakers and Delegates for their valuable contributions and to our funding partners who made this event possible – the Northern Territory Government and the Australian Government through Music Australia. Our thanks also go to Moshtix, Live Nation, Darwin Festival, the Live Music Office, ARIA & PPCA, the Australian Festivals Association, and Vibelab for their valuable contributions, along with Sounds NSW, Arts Tasmania, and the South Australian Music Development Office, and the VMDO for supporting Delegates to attend.

A significant outcome from the Summit was the agreement that it should become an annual event, rotating each year to a different region across Australia, which will provide a forum for local communities to share their stories and celebrate Australia’s diverse music cultures.
